I had to export email messages to a CSV file from a specific folder in my Outlook mailbox. Nothing special, just a quick export. I noticed that Outlook allows messages to be exported, but the date of the message is missing in the export file! Really? Ich bin heute wieder einmal über ein Problem bei AAD Connect gestossen, das ich kurz erklären will. Speziell deshalb, weil nicht immer AAD Connect schuld ist, wenn mal ein Sync nicht funktioniert, Manchmal tut AAD Connect genau das was man ihm sagt, man muss halt nur wissen was in der Default Konfiguration für Regeln und Sicherheitsmechanismen eingebaut wurden.

Mein Problem hat sich ganz simpel geäussert. Ein User im Active Directory soll per AAD Connect synchronisiert werden. Egal ob er vorher per Attributelevel Filter oder einfach durch OU Folder Filter nicht synchronisiert wurde oder auch einfach nicht aufgefallen ist, dass er online nicht existiert hat. Plötzlich fällt auf, der User fehlt.

Gerade in großen Umgebungen gibt es neben einigen Firewalls sehr oft natürlich auch HTTP / HTTPS Proxy Server die zur Sicherheit den Verkehr von Clients nach extern überprüfen sollen. Gerade wenn sie Dirsync im Einsatz haben kann das häufig zu Konfigurationsproblemen führen und führt zu einigen Verwirrungen.

Das Problem?

Ihr Dirsync Server steht im internen LAN und muss aber für die Synchronisation mit dem Azure Active Directory mit dem Internet kommunizieren. Der Firewall Mensch sagt aber “nein - verwendet den Proxy”.

Eine tolle Alternative zu Public Foldern sind sogenannte Shared Mailboxen in Office 365. Diese haben bis zu 10 GB Speicher, kosten jedoch keine Lizenz. Durch Berechtigungen können diese automatisch in Outlook eingebunden werden, können E-Mail Nachrichten empfangen und haben auch sonst viele Funktionalitäten eines Mailaccounts.

Wenn Sie nun eine bereits vergebene Mailbox in eine shared Mailbox umwandeln wollen, geht das sehr einfach über PowerShell.

Zunächst verbinden Sie sich zum Service:

Um dies in Exchange Online abzubilden, benötigt man eine Dynamische Verteilerliste.

In der Exchange Administrationskonsole kann man dann bequem eintragen, welche Kriterien die Verteilerliste haben soll und natürlich auch, welche Empfänger ausgewählt werden sollen. Hier kann man dann gleich einschränken, ob nur Mitglieder mit Exchange Postfächern, oder mit externen Mailadressen und vieles mehr selektiert werden sollen. Über Regeln können bereits in der GUI Filter gesetzt werden.

Ein RDP Zertifikat setzen ist jetzt grad keine grosse Herausforderung. Gibts ja ein tolles Tool genannt tsconfig.msc – ruft man das auf, kann man auf den RDP Connection Settings einfach das Zertifikat einstellen. Ähm, nein.

Unter Windows 2012 R2 gibts kein tsconfig.msc mehr. Gut – wir sagen jetzt mal, alles kein Problem, kann man alles per Policy ja auch konfigurieren. Da gibts einen wirklich guten Blog Eintragwie man das per Policy setzt sogar inklusive hauseigener CA Template Config damit das Ganze auch schön sicher ist. Supa Sache und würd ich jedem empfehlen im Prinzip sogar für alle Server.

Mir ist das zuletzt was interessantes passiert – es hat ein wenig mit einer Immutable ID zu tun – siehe Wiki.

Also – einfach beschrieben ist eine ImmutableID eindeutig und sollte sich niemals ändern. Das bringt mich auf eine Idee.. wollten sie schon immer mal die Welt aus den Angeln heben und etwas unveränderliches ändern? Jetzt ist die Zeit dafür gekommen.

Ich habe zuletzt bei einem Kunden das Problem bei einer frischen ADFS / DirSync Installation als Basis aber eine bestehende Domain ohne onPremise Exchange aber mit bestehendem W14 O365 Account. Also – der Kunde hat halt bisher an lokalen Domain User gehabt plus eine online Identity die getrennt voneinander zu verwalten war. Was letztendlich etwas lästig aber in kleineren Umgebungen ja nicht so dramatisch ist.

In Office 365 sind Anmeldeinformationen flexibel lösbar: man kann eigene Identitäten in der Cloud betreiben, sein Active Directory mittels DirSync syncronisieren oder mittels ADFS Servern eine hybride Lösung mit SSO implementieren.

Was passiert jedoch, wenn man eine hybride Lösung wieder auflösen möchte, bzw. diese “zurückbaut”. Diesen Fall hatte ich unlängst in einem Projekt, wo der Kunde zwar DirSync und ADFS Server entfernte, jedoch in Office 365 die Information erhalten blieb, dass es sich um eine federierte Domain handelt und so jedesmal bei Anmeldung unter https://portal.microsoftonline.com mit der federierten Domain Office 365 den User zum nicht mehr existierenden ADFS Server schickte.

Ganz frisch wurde gestern die neue Version des Coding4Fun.Phone.Toolkit v1.5.0 für Windows Phone auf codeplex veröffentlicht.

Das Toolkit liefert eine Reihe von nützlichen Controls für Windows Phone Silverlight applications. In der neuen Version sind einige neue Controls hinzugekommen und es wurden einige Bugfixes durchgeführt.

Das Toolkit kann nur für die Entwicklung von Phone Apps mit Mango (Version 7.1) verwendet werden.

Eigentlich noch recht frisch ist Microsofts Web Developer Tool WebMatrix in Erinnerung – Version 1 (akt. v7.1) wurde im Winter 2010 veröffentlicht und erfreut sich bei Web-Developern großer Beliebtheit. Nun – ganz frisch – wurde WebMatrix Version 2 Beta auf https://www.microsoft.com/web/webmatrix/betafeatures.aspx veröffentlicht (erste Infos dazu gab es schon in den ASPNET-Announcements hier).

WebMatrix ist ein freies Tool für Webentwickler mit Unterstützung von ASP.NET und weiterer Script-Sprachen und enthält (nach wie vor) IIS Express zum raschen und einfachen Testen und Debuggen von Website-Projekten (inkl. eigenem Test-Zertfikat für HTTPS). Vor allem fertige, freie Software-Projekte wie DotNetNuke, Umbraco, Drupal, Blogengine.net aber auch Joomla oder WordPress Pakete können sozusagen per Mausklick installiert und ausprobiert werden.

Facebook Seiten Bug Mehr bzw. Bearbeiten fehlt!!!

Vor kurzem ist uns bei einigen Facebook Seiten aufgefallen, dass der Link “Mehr” (bzw. “Bearbeiten”) FEHLT! Dieser dient zur Verwaltung der Einträge und Applikationen einer Facebook-Seite, wo man Administrator ist.

Interessanterweise war dies bei einigen – aber nicht bei allen - betreuten Seiten der Fall – trotz Admin-Berechtigungen.

Das ist – gelinde gesagt – blöd! Vor allem, wenn Applikationen links eingetragen oder geändert werden sollen.

Und ganz blöd, wenn ein Redaktionsplan einer Seite mit 140.000 Fans eine Änderung vorsieht – und es klappt einfach nicht, weil die Links nicht vorhanden sind!

Digitalkameras sind ja nicht mehr wegzudenken – vor allem in der Ferienzeit sollen damit die schönsten Urlaubsbilder eingefangen werden. Um verlustfrei fotografieren zu können verwenden viel Fotografen als Speicherformat das RAW Format. Microsoft hat dazu nun ein Codec Pack veröffentlicht, mit dem diese Daten nun auch im Windows Explorer und in der Windows Live Foto Galerie 2011 angezeigt werden können.

Das Codec Pack unterstützt einige Kameramodelle aller gängigen Hersteller und steht in einer 32bit und in einer 64bit Variante zum Download zur Verfügung.

Facebook Analytics mit Insight und PageLever

Zur Auswertung von Facebook Aktivitäten gibt es verschiedenste Möglichkeiten.

Facebook-Seiten Statistiken können direkt mit Facebook Insights ausgewertet werden, siehe auch hier.

Jetzt gibt es ein neues Tool pagelever.com. Das Tool kann 14 Tage als Trial ausprobiert werden, dann kostet es von 34 bis 94 USD pro Monat.

DPM Tipp 3 - System State und Bare Metal Recovery Fehler

Vor kurzem hatte ich in DPM 2010 das Szenario, dass sich ein Rechner partout weigert, seinen “System State” und sein “Bare Metal Recovery” zu sichern. Alle zu sichernden Elemente können gebackupt werden, nur diese beiden Tasks bleiben im Status “Replica is inconsistent”. In der DPM Console sieht das dann etwa so aus:

Wenn Sie selbst DPM 2010 im Einsatz haben, kennen Sie dieses Problem vielleicht.

Um den Fehler zu lokalisieren, helfen u.a. die Notifications, diese sind eingetragen. Also starten wir mal den “Consistency Check” Vorgang nochmals. Beim Synchronisieren erhält der Admin so die Warnungen per E-Mail, beispielsweise so:

Wie schon in DPM Tipp 1 - Notifications einrichten gezeigt, sind Notifications in DPM Server 2010 rasch konfiguriert. Wenn Sie einen Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 (MOM) betreiben, so kann DPM seine Warnungen auch (konsolidiert) an MOM senden.

Was braucht man dazu? Neben MOM und DPM das System Center Data Protection Manager 2010 Monitoring Management Pack. Der Deployment Guide “OM2007_MP_DPMv3.docx” auf derselben Seite liefert Anleitung und zusätzliche Informationen.

Zunächst wird in der Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 Console in der Aktionen-Taskpane der Link “Import Management Packs” ausgewählt und danach das downgeloadete Paket “Microsoft.Windows.SystemCenterDPM2010.mp” installiert. Es folgt eine Dialogbox mit Info und das entsprechende Icon neben dem Management Pack.

System Center Data Protection Manager 2010 ist eine feine Sache. Eigentlich recht simpel und sehr praktisch, so ein vollautomatisiertes Backup von verschiedenen Windows Rechnern mit Versionierung, Monitoring und einfachem Recovery by User! Ich selbst verwende DPM seit der 2006er Version – ganz nach dem Motto:

“Backup, before you wish you had!”

Diesen Spruch möchte ich übrigens jedem, der mit IT zu tun hat, sehr ans Herz legen…

Mit dieser kurzen Artikel-Reihe möchte ich ein paar Tipps und Hinweise zum DPM 2010 liefern. Vieles in DPM ist einfach zu bewerkstelligen, bei Setup und im laufenden Betrieb gibt es aber auch immer wieder Fragen und Fallstricke – genau auf diese Szenarien werde ich hier immer wieder in loser Reihenfolge eingehen, um System Center Admins das Leben etwas zu vereinfachen – die IT ist schon komplex genug.

System Center Advisor einrichten Teil 3- Troubleshooting

Das Entfernen von Atlanta-Diensten (Teil 1) und Installieren des SC Advisor RC (Teil 2) funktioniert ja recht einfach. Üblicherweise läuft der Setup-Prozess ganz nach dem Motto Next-Next-Finish und reportet dann in die Cloud-Dienste.

Dennoch gab es auch in meiner Installation einen Stolperstein: Das Installieren des Gateways auf dem vorgesehenen Rechner hat nicht funktioniert und das Setup verweigerte die Installation.

Bevor ich zur Lösung (bzw. zum Workaround) komme, hier die Situation und der Weg der Analyse:

Microsoft Codename Atlanta wurde zu System Center Advisor. Aktuell liegt das Online-Monitoring Tool als Release Candidate vor (siehe Microsoft Atlanta wird zu System Center Advisor).

System Center Advisor läuft auf x86 und x64 Windows Server 2008 (und später) und kann eben diese Maschinen und Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (und später) überwachen. Die Verwaltungsoberfläche läuft – wie auch beispielsweise Windows Azure - in einer Silverlight 4.0 Website in der Microsoft Cloud.

In diesem Beitrag geht es in zwei Teilen darum, die Beta-Version von Atlanta von bestehenden Maschinen zu entfernen und danach die aktuellen Services von System Center Advisor einzurichten.

Nach dem Entfernen der Beta-Version von Atlanta in Teil 1 nun zum spannenderen Teil: Die Installation von System Center Advisor Gateway und Agents auf den zu überwachenden Maschinen.

Wie die Beta-Version ist auch der Release Candidate des System Center Advisor ein freier Download. Mit SC Advisor können x86 und x64 Versionen von Windows Server 2008 (und später) und Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (und später) überwacht werden – für andere Systeme ist SC Advisor (derzeit) nicht vorgesehen.

Evan Basalik hat die Applikation CSAD entwickelt - da die Tools PSSDiag und SQLDiag gegen SQL Azure nicht funktionieren - um rasch eine Zusammenfassung der wesentlichen Daten einer SQL-Datenbank als Report zu erhalten – vor allem zum Troubleshooting von SQL Azure Performance-Problemen. CSAD liest ALLE Information aus den public Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) (diese funktionieren grundsätzlich genauso gegen einen lokalen SQL Server).

System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 Beta

Ganz frisch ist die Evaluation Version System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 Beta im Microsoft Download Center zu laden.

SCVMM 2012 dient zur Verwaltung von Hyper-V Maschinen und hat in der Version 2012 (Beta) einige neue Funktionen von Hyper-V Cluster bis zu Resource Optimization, LoadBalancer, Private Cloud Management und Service Lifecycle Management hinzu bekommen. Besonders die “Private Cloud” Verwaltung finde ich bemerkenswert und top-aktuell!

In Marketing Schreibweise heißt das so: “System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 delivers industry leading fabric managment, virtual machine management and services deployment in private cloud environments.”

Microsoft Atlanta wird zu System Center Advisor

Microsofts SQL Server ist fast in jedem Microsoft (Server) Produkt drin. Und auch mein Lieblings-Produkt. So habe ich im Laufe meines Berufslebens bereits von SQL Server 6.5 bis hin zum aktuellen SQL Server 2008 R2 viel Datenbank-Wartung durchgeführt und viele Lösungen entwickelt. Hierbei lernt man viel – und auch viele Stolpersteine!

So hatte ich vor kurzem die Anforderung, eine Reihe von SQL Server Reports neu zu generieren. Dazu habe ich mal vor einigen Jahren ein kleines Tool geschrieben, das eine XML Datei durchläuft und alle dort enthaltenen Reports mit bestimmten Parametern als PDF File persistiert – das soll weiterverwendet werden. Nun haben sich die Reports und deren Parameter geändert und eigentlich muss ich zum Neuaufruf nur das reports.xml File neu erstellen und das Tool (sozusagen per Knopfdruck) starten und alles sollte erledigt sein. Soweit so gut, das war die Vorgeschichte.

Neu in IE9 sind die “New Tabs” (STRG+T). Wie kann man einstellen, wie viele zuvor besuchten Websites IE9 präsentiert, wenn man eine neue Website mit “New Tab” öffnet?
Standardmäßig werden zwei Zeilen mit den am stärksten besuchten Seiten angezeigt. Ich finde diese Funktion sehr praktisch, denn beim Öffnen einer neuen Registerkarte will man im Regelfall ja … eine neue oder bestehende Seite öffnen.

Da hat sich doch SysAdminGeek ein kleines Script geschrieben, um die Sysinternals Website nach neuen Updates der Sysinternal Tools abzufragen…

Das kleine Script liest live.sysinternals.com/tools aus und vergleicht die online Files mit jenen im lokalen Filesystem im aktuellen Verzeichnis. Ich selbst hätte es zwar eher als kleine .net Console-Applikation gebastelt, aber der Zweck heiligt ja bekanntlich die Mittel; bzw. ein begabter SysAdmin bekommt das wahrscheinlich auch in PowerShell hin – aber so als Commandline-Batch ist es definitiv rasch und einfach!

TFS2010 mit Visual Studio 2008

Diesmal ein kleiner Tipp für Visual Studio-Developer und Developing-Teams. Wer – so wie ich – den neuen TFS 2010 (Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010) in seinem Entwicklungsteam einsetzt kann von vielen neuen Funktionen in der Team-Zusammenarbeit profitieren.
Also liegt der Gedanke nahe, TFS2010 auch mit Visual Studio 2008 zu verwenden.

Unbedarfter Weise öffnet man ein “altes” Projekt mit Visual Studio 2008 und versucht nun die Verbindung zum neuen TFS2010 herzustellen, um das bestehende 2008er-Projekt in TFS2010 einzuchecken… und scheitert.

Nun, zum Beispiel hinterlegbare Karten (Beispiel unten), Sparklines (die Wellengrafik “2004 Verkaufsverlauf” unten) und zusätzliche Diagrammtypen. Reports werden rascher aufgebaut (cached datasets), Auswertungen sind mit dem neuen Report Builder rascher bearbeitbar und können als Datafeed ausgegeben werden.

Das Leben als Datenbank-Administrator steckt voller Überraschungen. Mal gehören Indizies erstellt oder neu aufgebaut, Volltextkataloge rebuildet, Datenbanken gebackupt, gewartet, restored und natürlich ist ein DB-Admin Ansprechpartner für alle weiteren auftretenden Probleme und Wünsche der IT und der Anwender.

So hatte ich vor kurzem die Anforderung, in einer Datenbank gespeicherte Bilder “herauszuholen”, also klassische BLOBs (Binary Large Objects) als Dateien zu speichern.

In meiner Datenbank existiert eine Tabelle “MyFiles” mit einer Spalte vom Typ IMAGE. Das Pendant ab SQL Server 2005 wäre der “neue” Datentyp VARBINARY; in meinem Fall handelt es sich um eine konvertierte DB aus SQL 2000 in SQL 2005.

Alt aber gut: immer wieder erhalte ich Anfragen, wenn ein Outlook beim Einrichten plötzlich meint, es sei englisch und der Posteingang heißt dann plötzlich Inbox, Gesendete Objekte heißen Sent Items u.s.w. Grundsätzlich ist dies nur ein kosmetisches Problem, trotzdem stört es die meisten User.

Ursache dafür ist meistens, dass “irgendeine” Software, z.B. ein Virenscanner oder etwas anderes statt der Landessprache in Englisch eingestellt ist oder man beim ersten Start von Outlook sein System noch in Englisch eingestellt hat.

Das freie Tool Disk2vhd der System-Gurus Mark Russinovich und Bryce Cogswell aus den Windows Sysinternal liegt seit 1. Dezember in Version 1.4 vor (Details siehe auch hier im Blog Wie konvertiere ich einen physischen PC in einen virtuellen PC?).

Disk2vhd kann auch per Kommandozeile gestartet werden, nämlich so einfach:

SQL Server Datenbank Diagramme kopieren

Datenbanken können recht groß und komplex werden – dafür sind leistungsfähige Datenbank-Systeme wie SQL Server ja da. Und weil ERP-Systeme und große Anwendungen gleich mal ein paar hundert bis tausend Tabellen beinhalten können, wurden die Datenbank-Diagramme erfunden, um Relationen zwischen den Tabellen grafisch abbilden zu können.

Erst mit der grafischen Darstellung kann sich ein Datenbank-Administrator und Entwickler ein (Teil-) Bild des Daten-Schemas machen – zu mindestens gilt das für mich. Ein kleines Datenbank-Diagramm in SQL Server kann zum Beispiel so aussehen:

Virtuelle Maschinen (VM) können ja ganz leicht durch Kopieren geklont werden. Danach sollte der Security Identifier – kurz SID - geändert werden, damit die Maschine im Netzwerk eindeutig identifizierbar ist (zum Beispiel in WSUS: Wenn das nicht passiert und mehrere VMs dieselbe SID besitzen kann es zu pendelnden Maschinen-Infos führen), sonst “prügeln” sich die geklonten Systeme wie in Star Wars, nur nicht so bilderreich…

Es gibt viele Wege, eine physische Maschine in eine virtuelle Maschine zu konvertieren. Somit können “Legacy”-Systeme konsolidiert werden und man kann sich viel Arbeit sparen und bestehende Systeme weiter laufen lassen anstelle die Systeme neu aufzusetzen und neu einzurichten.

Der einfachste Weg zum Konvertieren ist das brandneue Tool von sysinternals.com der “System”-Gurus Mark Russinovich und Bryce Cogswell:

Disk2vhd v1.0

konvertiert eine physische Maschine im laufenden Betrieb (!) in ein VHD-File, welches dann einfach unter Virtual PC oder Hyper-V weiterverwendet werden kann. Dazu wird ein Snapshot erzeugt und die Laufwerke in ein VHD-File geschrieben.

Wie kann man am besten Computerprobleme beschreiben? Sie kennen jemanden, der Ihnen helfen könnte, der ist aber gerade nicht erreichbar? Mit Windows 7 gibt es ja den coolen “XP Mode”: Der Kompatibilitätsmodus, um alte Windows-Anwendungen (Legacy-Applications) in einer virtuellen Windows XP Maschine weiterlaufen zu lassen, die in modernen Windows-Versionen wie Vista oder Windows 7 nicht funktionieren - so vielmals gehört und gelesen.

Jetzt hatte auch ich tatsächlich den Bedarf, das auszuprobieren und zwar mit einer “alten” Software, die nicht unter Windows 7 läuft. Ich brauche die Software nur alle heiligen Zeiten, deshalb lohnt sich ein Update auf eine neue Version derzeit nicht.

Vor etwa einer Woche wurde der Deep Zoom Composer Release Candidate veröffentlicht. Ab sofort gibt es die finale Version downzuladen: Deep Zoom Compoeser in Version 1.0 für Silverlight 3 vom 22. Juli.
Die Software läuft unter Windows 7; Windows Vista; Windows XP Service Pack 2 und natürlich wird das Silverlight 3 PlugIn benötigt.

Ich bin vor kurzem über eine Ankündigung zu einem Tool auf codeplex.com gestoßen, das vielversprechend klingt: SharePoint 2007 - Import from Spreadsheet to List. Das Tool von “ramp” ist noch ganz frisch (vom 14. Juli) und kann frei geladen und verwendet werden (Microsoft Permissive Lizenz).

Die Projektbeschreibung: “Import from Spreadsheet is the missing facet to the SharePoint 2007 List features. SharePoint let’s a user create custom list from a spreadsheet, but lacks the ability to import data to an existing SP list. This feature developed in C# .Net and easy to install will do just that.”

Vistitkarten und Handynummer austauschen war gestern. Heutzutage macht man das anscheinend – das kannte ich nicht – mit “Poken”. Die Idee stammt von einer Schweizer Firma Poken, welche digitale Visitkarten und kleine Schlüsselanhänger herstellt.

Durch das Aufeinanderlegen von zwei Pokens findet per Funk ein Datenaustausch der Pokens statt, ein grünes LED signalisiert ob´s geklappt hat. Aussehen tut das Ganze so:

Im November letzten Jahres hat Microsoft angekündigt, eine kostenlose Anti-Malware Lösung zu entwickeln. Diese Lösung hat den Codenamen “Morro” (benannt nach einem Strand in Sao Paulo, Brasilien) und wird bald (ab der zweiten Jahreshälfte) als Trial verfügbar sein.

Operations Manager 2007 R2 RTM

Microsoft´s System Center wurde um Operations Manager 2007 R2 RTM reicher (zur Zeit ist das Kürzel “R2” ja sehr populär bei MS…). Operations Manager ist Microsoft’s “end-to-end monitoring product for IT environments and datacenters” und dient also als Mitglied des System Centers zur zentralen Verwaltung vieler Rechner (Microsoft OS, Unix, Linux) – genau das Richtige für IT-Pro´s.

Operations Manager 2007 R2 ist zur Zeit als Evaluation(180 Tage Laufzeit) in Englisch downloadbar. Ab Juli soll die endgültige Version verfügbar sein. Aussehen tut die Konsole aus dem Introducing-Paper ja fesch…

Perl auf IIS7 einrichten

Diesmal etwas für Firmen-Admins und Hoster. Schon etwas länger her, da habe ich auf einem Webserver – damals noch ein Windows Server 2003 – Perl installiert, damit das Webstatistik-Tool awstats läuft. Nun gibt es einen neuen Webserver – diesmal Windows Server 2008 x64.

Also fröhlich Perl64 von https://www.activestate.com/activeperl/ herunterladen, installieren, einen Handler für .pl files eintragen … und es funktioniert nicht.

Nachdem ich damit recht lange herumgespielt habe, wurde ich schließlich fündig: In blogs.iis.net habe ich den Artikel Running Perl on IIS 7 von Wade Hilmo gefunden, der step-by-step beschreibt, wie vorzugehen ist um Perl auf IIS7 zum Laufen zu bringen.

Ab sofort ist die neue Version Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 zum Download verfügbar (Version 3.2 habe ich wohl versäumt; meine letzte war 3.1). Unterstützt werden alle Windows Versionen von Windows XP bis zu Windows 7 inkl. x64, die Größe des Packerls ist 5 bis 7MB.

Barrierefreiheit von Websites ist in Europa leider noch wenig populär, ganz anders als in den USA. Dabei geht es primär um die einfache Lesbarkeit und Verwendbarkeit von Websites und deren Funktionen im Alltag.

Heute habe ich eine ganz aktuelle Studie (von Dezember 2008 bis Jänner 2009) gefunden, wo mehr als 1100 Benutzer von Screenreader-Geräten befragt wurden, wie sie Websites benutzen und welche Merkmale für Anwender mit Sehbehinderungen wichtig sind. Die Umfrage (in englisch) ist sehr klar und schön aufbereitet.

Microsoft hat mit dem adCenter Beta ein Werbungs- und Analyse-Programm gestartet, das von der Planung von Werbestrategien über die Steuerung bis hin zur Auswertung eine Gesamtlösung anbietet.

Damit steht Microsoft adCenter gegen Google AdWords und Yahoo Publisher Network. Besser gesagt: “stand”, denn das Programm wird nun eingestellt: Microsoft adCenter Analytics Beta Closed.

Für die Teilnehmer des Beta-Programms stehen die Dienste noch bis 31. Dezember 2009 zur Verfügung. Mehr Informationen finden sich im adCenter Analytics Blog. Das adCenter Analytics Blog wird auf “Insights and Analysis” Blog umbenannt und fortgeführt.

Microsoft Surface zum Anfassen

Letzte Woche hatte ich gemeinsam mit einigen Kollegen die Möglichkeit Microsoft Surface live anzuschauen – also anzugreifen, rumzuspielen und mich darüber zu informieren.

Microsoft Surface ist vereinfacht gesagt ein Tisch mit großem Display, welcher Bewegungen erkennt und darauf reagiert – wie ein großes, liegendes Touch Display. Auch wenn die Technik wesentlich aufwändiger ist und auch mehr Möglichkeiten bietet, dazu unten mehr.

Im Blog wurde schon 2007 (Surface - Technische Gedanken zu einem angeblich untechnischen Produkt) und 2008 (Microsoft Surface kommt) über Surface berichtet, nun gibt es derzeit in Österreich zwei Stück davon: eines im Microsoft Innovation Center in Wien und eines besitzt Siemens.

Wollen Sie mal rasch einen PC auf Viren-Infektionen scannen? Jeden zweiten Dienstag im Monat veröffentlicht Microsoft eine aktualisierte Version des Malicious Software Removal Tools, die aktuelle Version ist demnach vom 13. Jänner. Das Tool ist von Microsoft Update, Windows Update und dem Microsoft Download Center beziehbar.

Dieses Monat sind die Stämme von Win32/Conficker und Win32/Banload hinzugekommen. Die regelmäßigen Aktualisierungen sind vor allem deswegen sehr wichtig, weil sich die Schädlinge sehr rasch verändern können: “The malware utilizes several layers of polymorphism and packing to hinder analysis and detection”.

SQL - wie speicherst du? Oder Planen eines SQL Server Systems

Die heute übliche Hardware für ein SQL Server System wird zumeist schon von Beginn an sehr groß dimensioniert: Quadcore-(Multi)-CPUs, 64bit-System, 4GB oder mehr RAM und große, schnelldrehende Festplatten (SAS, SAN & Co) vielleicht sogar mit einem RAID 10 (bitte kein RAID 5…). Damit ist im Regelfall ausreichend Kapazität vorhanden, um auch größere Datenbanken vernünftig betreiben zu können.

Wenn sich ein Engpass ergibt, so kann das meist durch weitere CPUs und mehr RAM behoben werden. Aber wie ist das mit der Festplatten-Performance? Lässt sich diese weiter steigern?

Seit ein paar Tagen gibt es im Microsoft Download Center den SQL Server 2008 Report Builder 2.0 RC1 downzuladen. Dies ist der englische Release Candiate des neuen Report-Designers, welcher für Endbenutzer im Stil von Office 2007 (also mit Ribbons) entwickelt wurde.

Damit sollen Power-User leicht eigene Reports erstellen und verwenden können, ohne Entwickler zu bemühen. Reports können damit auch direkt vom Server geöffnet und bearbeitet werden, es gibt Assistenten (next, next finish ;-)) und einen Abfrage-Builder.

Tool gegen SQL Injection

Seit Ende Juni gibt es eine Hilfe für Entwickler und IT-Administratoren gegen SQL Injection in Websites vom Typ classic asp und zwar den Microsoft Source Code Analyzer for SQL Injection - June 2008 CTP (siehe auch Beitrag Totgesagte leben länger - so auch SQL-Injection).

Das Tool benötigt das Microsoft .Net 3.0 Framework und ist ein Command line-Utility. Nach Entpacken des Download-Pakets empfiehlt sich daher ein erster Blick in Readme.html. Um eine einzelne asp-Seite zu prüfen, wird diese einfach mit dem /Input-Parameter aufgerufen:

Schon ein Monat ist er alt - aber vielen (noch) unbekannt: Der Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.1 für Windows (MBSA). MBSA ist ein einfaches, kostenfreies Tool, welches ermöglicht den Sicherheitsstatus eines Windows-PCs anhand der Sicherheitsempfehlungen von Microsoft zu ermitteln. Dabei können übliche Schwachstellen und fehlende Patches entdeckt und die Systemsicherheit verbessert werden.

MBSA ist vor allem für KMUs gedacht. Der Analyzer kann mit und ohne WSUS arbeiten. Das Tool enthält ein grafisches und ein Commandline-Interface und kann auch Remote Scans ausführen (also fremde PCs prüfen).

Brauchbares SQL fÜr HOT und COLD

Es gibt eine Applikation, einmal HOT (Echtdaten) und einmal COLD (Demodaten) - die Benutzer verwenden HOT zum Arbeiten und COLD zum Testen.

Zur Neuinstallation von PCs ist es (besonders bei gleichen Maschinen) sehr bequem, einen PC als Muster aufzusetzen und diesen dann zu duplizieren. In kleineren Firmen hat man jedoch oft kein Windows Deployment Services (WDS - übrigens der Nachfolger von RIS) zur Verfügung.

Ohne WDS hilft dann ein manuelles Klonen mit einer eigenen Software. Das Image wird als File oder direkt auf eine andere Festplatte, DVD, auf ein anderes Speichermedium oder auch auf einen FTP-Server geschrieben und von dort wiederhergestellt. Dazu gibt es eine Reihe von Tools, beispielsweise auf der kommerziellen Seite Acronis True Image, Symantec Ghost, R-Drive Image, als Freeware Clone Maxx, DiskImage, g4u, Clone Disk Generator und viele weitere.

Die Antwort ist verblüffend einfach: “Xobni” (sprich “Zob-ni”). So nennt sich eine amerikanische Mini-Firma aus San Francisco, bestehend aus einer Handvoll Jung-Zwanzigern, die ein cooles PlugIn für Microsoft Outlook entwickelt haben.

Was kann das PlugIn? Xobni installiert ein eigenes Panel in Outlook und spart Zeit, indem es emails, Kontakte und Attachments indiziert, in Verbindung setzt und eine schnelle Suche darauf ermöglicht.

Was ist das Besondere an Xobni? Nun, zunächst einmal hat sogar Bill Gates das Tool Xobni als “the next generation of social networking” bezeichnet.
Warum? Weil Xobni für jede E-Mail, jedes Attachment und jede Person ein Profil erstellt und diese Informationen in Beziehungen umsetzt. Das wiederum ist Basis für die schnelle und umfangreiche Suche in einer aufgeräumten Microsoft-konformen Oberfläche.

Auch wenn mittlerweile SQL Server 2008 in den Startlöchern steht - die Realität sieht zumeist (viel) älter aus. So hatte ich vor kurzem einen Datenbankumstieg, wo von einem alten Datenbankserver auf einen neuen zu migrieren war. Die Datenbank selbst war zwar SQL Server 2005, das war jedoch ein Upgrade von einem SQL Server 2000. Eigentlich kein Problem, doch passten die (beim 2000er SQL Server noch zusätzlich zu installierenden) Reporting Services nicht zur DB-Version 2005 und waren noch RS 2000 SP2.

Virtual Server VHD Files vergrößern

Jeder, der Virtual Server einsetzt kennt wahrscheinlich das Problem: Die Anforderungen wachsen und die virtualisierten Systeme werden irgendwann einmal zu klein. Windows Updates (WU) tragen ihren Teil dazu bei.

So ist es auch mir passiert. Vor etwa 2 Jahren habe ich begonnen, viele virtuelle Windows Server-Systeme für verschiedenste Zwecke und Funktionen anzulegen - damals mit einer 16GB großen Systempartition C: (ich war der naiven Meinung, dachte das genügt für alle Zeiten ;-), während die Daten (SQL Server Datenbanken, Webs etc.) immer auf einer eigenen Datenpartition D: liegen, Logs auf E: und so weiter.

Tafiti ist eine experimentelle Suchmaschine basierend auf Live Search, welche eine Weboberfläche mit Microsoft Silverlight bietet. “Tafiti” ist Suaheli und steht für “forschen” (der Name klingt ja schon cool und neu). Die Oberfläche wird noch als Beta-Version ausgegeben, funktioniert aber bestens.

Für die Anzeige der Website ist das aktuelle Silverlight-PlugIn erforderlich. Wenn dieses noch nicht installiert ist, folgt eine Download-Möglichkeit mit Installation. Die Suchmaschine präsentiert sich mit einer gewohnten Textbox und anklickbaren Kategorien (Books, Feeds, News, Images und Web).

In Teil Eins wurde ein Sidebar Gadget als Vorbereitung für das Signieren vom simplen ZIP-Format in eine CAB-Datei gepackt. Teil Zwei beschreibt nun, wie Sie (beliebigen) Programmcode selbst mit einem Zertifikat versehen können.

Nun, haben Sie ein eigenes digitales Zertifikat?
Wenn ja: fein. Wenn nein: auch gut. Dann erstellen wir uns einfach ein eigenes Zertifikat!

Variante 1: Selbsterstelltes Zertifikat erzeugen und verwenden

Wir benötigen das Tool makercert. Das Tools ist Bestandteil von Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Platform SDK und im Verzeichnis C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\Bin zu finden. Makecert erstellt ein X.509-Zertifikat mit öffentlichem und privatem Schlüssel - allerdings nur zu Testzwecken. Innerhalb Ihrer Firma wäre das aber wahrscheinlich schon ausreichend.

Letzten Samstag war ich auf einer Flughafenbesichtigung - dankenswerterweise habe ich bei einem Gewinnspiel etwas gewonnen: ein Vormittag Flughafen Wien mit Besichtigung des Towers, einer Flughafenrundfahrt und Besuch bei der Feuerwehr (und den Feuerwehrmännern). Zum Abschluss waren wir noch im Visit Air Center.

Was das alles mit dem Technet Blog zu tun hat? Nun ja, jetzt kommts: das Visitair Center ist neu ausgestattet. Touchscreens, Kopfhörer, Bildschirme und vieles mehr. Unter anderem gibt es da auch einen Präsentationstisch (ok, er ist sehr groß), auf dem man Magnetkarten ablegt und dann an den dafür definierten Punkten weitere Infos erhält - Zum Flughafen, zur Geschichte, etc. etc.

Man kann es gar nicht oft genug sagen: haltet Eure Systeme fit, haltet Eure Systeme gepatcht, spielt Updates regelmässig ein, etc. etc.

Viele werden das jetzt belächeln und als alten Hut abwinken, leider komme ich aber immer wieder zu Kunden, die Ihre Systeme nach wie vor nicht patchen, bzw. vom WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) noch nie gehört haben. Dabei ist es damit so einfach, ganze Netzwerke zu aktualisieren - ohne Administration per Pedes.

Wer kennt es nicht: gaaanz dringend noch eine Kleinigkeit im System machen - schnell remote anmelden, alles erledigen, fertig. Denkste.

Schadenfroh meldet sich ein abgelaufenes Zertifikat, welches die Verbindung sicherstellt - tja, das wars dann wohl mit “ich brauche nur noch 5 Minuten”.

Um solche unliebsamen Dinge zu vermeiden, hat Microsoft jetzt seine PKI-Dienste mit einem Tool aufgewertet: Identity Lifecycle Manager (ILM). Zertifikatverwaltung, Identitätsbereitsstellung und die Verwaltungsfunktionen des Identity Integration Servers werden in diesem Produkt vereint.

Es gibt Themen, da können IT-Pros gar nicht gut genug informiert werden. Dazu gehört zweifelsohne das Thema Sicherheit. Oft wissen IT-Abteilungen erst nach Attacken, Hacks und Missbrauch, wie sie auf solche Vorfälle reagieren können und versuchen nachher, Löcher zu stopfen und ihre Infrastruktur sicherer zu machen.

Genau diesem Thema nimmt sich Microsoft mit einem neuen Online-Werkzeug an: Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC). Das MMPC ist ein Web-Portal, welches über “Threat Research and Response” (also Bedrohung, Analyse und Reaktion) informiert und es sich zum Ziel macht, die eigene IT vorher zu überprüfen, und Schwachstellen und Störungen zu minimieren.

HowTo Script in PowerShell

Langsam wird die neue PowerShell immer populärer.

Im Windows Server 2008 ist die PowerShell bereits in der Evaluation Version inkludiert. Für alle anderen Windows Betriebssysteme muss die PowerShell 1.0 heruntergeladen und installiert werden (Voraussetzung ist nur das Vorhandensein des .NET Framework 2.0).

Seit Ende Jänner ist die finale Version verfügbar, nun gibt es seit dem 31. Juli für die Benutzer der MUI Versionen von Windows XP und Windows Server 2003 eine PowerShell Version für x86, x64 und Server IA64 hier zu laden. (Hinweis: Die MUI Language Packs laufen nur unter den MUI Versionen von Windows. Zuerst muss die englische Version der PowerShell 1.0 installiert werden und danach das Language Pack for Windows PowerShell 1.0.)

Zwei neue Tools MSCD CTP und Network Monitor 3.1

Sie wollen eine große Datei herunterladen und der Download bricht immer wieder ab? Abhilfe schafft der Microsoft Secure Content Downloader (MSCD) July 2007, welcher als Community Technology Preview (CTP) verfügbar ist.

MSCD arbeitet im peer-to-peer Prinzip und lädt Teile des Downloads von anderen Clients und fehlende Teile vom zentralen Server. Damit wird eine wesentlich schnellere Downloadrate erreicht und MSCD kann unterbrochene Downloads fortsetzen. Die CTP ist allerdings nur für 4 Wochen lauffähig, es ist also damit zu rechnen, dass bald die finale Version verfügbar sein wird.

Kill Task per Script

Für administrative Zwecke, zum Beispiel für automatisierte Backups, Scheduled Tasks o.ä. ist es manchmal erforderlich, bestimmte Applikationen per Script zu beenden.

Letztlich hatte ich genau so eine Anforderung: Outlook sollte für das Backupen der OST-Datendatei geschlossen werden. Als Lösung wird ein simpler Aufruf von Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) verwendet, welcher abfragt, ob ein Prozess mit einem bestimmten Namen läuft und diesen terminiert:

Öffnen Sie Notepad oder einen ähnlichen Texteditor, kopieren Sie das obige Script hinein, passen Sie den Applikationsnamen an (z.B. Outlook.exe) und speichern Sie das Script killtask.vbs ab. Dann einfach Outlook starten und mit Doppelklick ausprobieren!
